In DAISY and EPUB books, a table of contents is automatically generated using all the headings. The readers of the DAISY book always have the option of navigating to any section or sub-section whether or not there is a Contents section inside of the e-text. The Table of Contents section is retained for informational purposes only.
If you are working with a .docx that was converted from an EPUB, it may have two Tables of Contents: one that was in the original book, and one that was generated when the EPUB was converted to .docx. You only need to retain one Table of Contents; you may delete the other.
Q:If a book does not already have a Table of Contents, are we to add one and format it as a list?
A: Nope! You can leave it as-is. One less thing to do. :)
Q: If we are using multiple levels of headings (three in this case), should this be reflected in the Table of Contents? If so, how?
A: The Content section of the digital talking book version should be the same as that in the source file. We don't change anything as we're actually not creating a functional table of contents for our readers - that's done upon conversion by using our headings.
If the source file displays multiple levels of headings in their Contents section we do the same by using nested lists. We can use the bulleted list tool to format the Contents section.
Q: Theomatics is a very long and complex book, with several chapters each having a large number of sub-sections. But, there is no Table of Contents section (in the epub or the .doc version.) Should I create one?
A: Using Adobe Digital Editions to open the epub, I can see a TOC; however the hierarchy of the headings is messed up (i.e. notice all the chapter headings beneath the Introduction section). Below is a screenshot of the publisher's TOC, but we'll need to fix it up and ensure a logical heading structure.
(Remember that the TOC is created automatically from the heading structure we provide in the Word doc; we don't need to create a separate TOC).
