Ellipsis

When it comes to ellipsis both the APA and MLA style guides state to use spaces between the dots.

To get the proper ellipsis in Word, we can use Auto Correct to insert ellipses when we type "…” (3 periods):

  • From the Insert tab go to Symbol
  • In the Symbol window, click on Auto Correct
  • Click on and then change to replace it with . . . (with a space between each dot)
  • Click OK, which will add this ability to your auto correct entries

In terms of accessibility, text-to-speech technologies appear to read them the same. They use a slight pause when they come across an ellipsis.
